James qualified as a dentist from Birmingham University in 1997. He studied Orthodontics at Liverpool Dental Hospital and Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral. He gained his Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2004 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Orthodontics from Liverpool University.

He currently works as a Specialty Doctor in two district general hospitals and at Cedar House Orthodontics.
